The Miracle of Music

Andrea 150x150 The Miracle of MusicWith Christmas just around the corner we are surrounded by music, music that has been around for hundreds of years and rearranged thousands of ways and yet still has the power to lift our hearts and fill us with excitement for the holiday season.

Last night I watched a holiday movie titled “The Christmas Choir” about a businessman who turned a group of homeless men into a Christmas choir and in doing so, changed their lives. During the film they often referred to the “miracle of music” and it got me thinking.

Music is, indeed, a miracle!  It has the power to soothe the soul, mend broken hearts and lift a downtrodden spirit. A few familiar notes can resurrect a long forgotten memory and suddenly you can see it so clearly it’s as if it happened just yesterday! Music can be a lifeline during times of trial, it can give you the strength to make it through and the hope that things can get better.

Music can also help to keep one’s sanity in an insane world such as in the movie “Shawshank Redemption.” Music kept the main character, Andy Dufresne, sane while spending time in solitary confinement. “I had Mr. Mozart to keep me company,” he tells his fellow inmates. “It’s in here and in here,” tapping his head and his heart. “That’s the beauty of music. They can’t get that from you.”

While the holiday season is recognized by many as a time for miracles, music is a miracle that happens every day. Take the time to enjoy it! Listen to it, dance to it, sing it, play it, compose it! Utilize the power of music and you will never be let down.
